Musical Entropy has released Voyage Voyage, a free shimmer reverb and drone instrument for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
This is another addition to the series of articles where I check out my favorite KVR Developer Challenge 2026 entries. We already covered Sucrose, Chance, and Gneiss, and Voyage Voyage is another one I really liked.
I am always on the search for fun reverb and delay plugins for sound design, and this one is simply fantastic for my workflow. The shimmer side works great for making lush sounds, while the Chaos control is amazing for making everything sound more dramatic.
Voyage Voyage is a shimmer reverb with pitch-shifted tails running through a BBD-style delay emulation. Push the decay high enough, and it turns into something closer to an instrument, generating drones and evolving textures from a single chord or even from its own exciters.
The developer, Ivan Cohen, says the project started after he designed a shimmer reverb algorithm for a client and found that the self-oscillating tail was fun to play as a texture source. That became the seed for a KVR Developer Challenge entry focused on reverb, drones, and hands-on sound design.
The plugin has the usual reverb controls like decay, tone, mix, input, output, low cut, and high cut, but the more interesting parts are Shimmer, Exciter, and Chaos. Exciter can feed the delay lines with tone or noise, while Chaos can push the sound toward diffusion, freeze-style reverb, modulated delay, resonators, and other unstable textures.
Ivan drew visual inspiration from Erica Synths’ FX units and Korg’s Submarine and Space/Riser-style shimmer ideas. He also added easter eggs and hidden UI features, including clickable objects that can set drone frequency, virtually kick the pedal like a spring reverb tank (I love this one), or generate randomized presets.
There is also support for game controllers, although I haven’t tried it yet. Ivan shared an Instagram video showing a joystick being automatically recognized and used to control parameters, which is brilliant for a plugin that’s halfway between an effect and an instrument.
On the AI side, Ivan says there is no AI in the code. The DSP was created and tweaked by hand over the years. AI was used a little for quick UI background-noise generation, but the UI concept was done manually, with Affinity Photo, layered assets, and even a small cat drawing by his seven-year-old daughter.
Voyage Voyage is available as a direct free download from the Musical Entropy website. The download is around 17 MB, and the plugin comes in VST3, AU, and CLAP formats for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
