Tonal Forms has released DADO – Lilac Alloy, a free Kontakt Player instrument available through Native Instruments.
Developer Francesco Sabatini reached out about this one via email, and it was one of the best emails I received in a while. Francesco is a lead product designer at Native Instruments, where he works on Kontakt instruments, while Tonal Forms is his independent project.
I always like seeing a polished Kontakt library that’s available for the free Kontakt Player, so I was happy to check this one out. I also like instruments that bring something different to the table and don’t just repeat the same ideas we’ve seen a million times before.
DADO – Lilac Alloy is definitely in that category.
It’s an inspiring instrument you can load, start playing with, and use as a quick way to discover new sounds. These types of libraries often help me get started with new musical ideas or even sound effects.
Sometimes it is simply about trying something new and being pleasantly surprised and inspired by what comes out on the other end.
The instrument is built around a 3D Cube interface, which Tonal Forms describes as the first actual 3D object rendered as a Kontakt instrument interface. The idea is that you hear what you see. Rotating and tilting the Cube blends Sound A, Sound B, and the FX layer in one gesture.
The sound palette focuses on evolving textures built from acoustic and metal-bodied instruments. DADO – Lilac Alloy includes eight evolving sounds and 31 Creative FX presets, with categories including reverb, delay, modulation, and distortion.
I love the interface. It has just the right balance of abstract, minimal, inspirational, and useful. It is easy to understand, looks great, and gives you nice visual feedback about what is happening, which makes you want to explore and play around with the instrument.
There is also a motion section that can animate the Cube automatically, with shape, rate, intensity, host sync, and retrigger options. You can use a global low-pass filter, attack, release, volume, independent octave and semitone controls for the two sound layers, key and scale selectors, and aftertouch assignments for volume, pan, tuning, or filter movement.
If you want quick inspiration, the dice and Variate options can generate new combinations without forcing you to browse manually. The browse view gives you a wider overview of Sound A, Sound B, and FX while keeping the Cube accessible.
DADO – Lilac Alloy is a 1 GB download and requires the free Kontakt Player or Kontakt. It runs on macOS 11-14 with Rosetta 2 or Windows 10 or higher, and requires Native Access for download and activation. Once installed and activated, it can be used offline.
