510k Arts has released WOMB intro, a free 909-inspired bass drum synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows.
510k is built by Alexkid, a producer and DJ with decades of experience, releases on F Communications, and a key role in the 2000s French dance music scene. Alexkid develops the concepts and prototypes in Berlin, while Tadashi, based in Nagoya, Japan, turns those ideas into the plugins you use in your DAW.
WOMB intro is the free edition of 510k’s WOMB bass drum designer. It uses the same synthesis core and the same eight sound-shaping controls as the paid version, but keeps things focused on a simple single-panel interface.
I absolutely love the design. It is clean and simple, and sometimes that is all you need. A nice, clear interface gives you something pleasant to look at while you shape the sound, without making a straightforward kick synth more complicated than it needs to be.
As for the plugin itself, WOMB intro is basically a 909-style kick drum synthesizer. There is nothing revolutionary about that, but if you like 909 kicks and are bored of reaching for samples, or you simply want something you can customize quickly, I think this gives you a nice range of classic electronic bass drum sounds.
The controls cover Tune, Punch, Sweep, Decay, Click Tone, Click Vol, Drive, and Volume. The kick is generated from scratch using a tuned oscillator, pitch sweep, transient click layer, and analog-style drive, so you can adjust the body, attack, tone, and tail without dealing with sample layers.
Of course, 909-style kicks can work in all sorts of electronic music, but they are also useful for layering under acoustic drums. One of my old bands used that trick all the time, even live. The drummer had a module that triggered a 909 kick underneath the real kick for a fuller sound.
WOMB intro is also a good starter tool if you want to learn more about drum synthesis. The 909 kick is a great place to begin because the relationship between pitch, sweep, click, drive, and decay is easy to hear.
The download process is simple. Add WOMB intro to your cart, complete the free checkout with your email, and you can access the download directly in your browser. The download is a 15 MB ZIP file containing the Windows and macOS installers, plus the manual.
WOMB intro is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS 11 or higher, and VST3 format for Windows 10 or higher. It is a 64-bit instrument plugin, so load it on an instrument or MIDI track, not as an audio insert effect.
