Stagecraft Software has released FlowFilter, a free filter plugin for macOS and Windows.
The developer informed me that FlowFilter is a major update to AutoFilter, the company’s filterscape plugin, which has now been transformed into a new product. FlowFilter retains the main idea of its predecessor while adding a new architecture, more filter models, and a cleaner workflow for automation.
The main technical change is the move to a state-variable filter. Stagecraft says the updated SVF architecture gives FlowFilter a smoother response, especially when parameters like cutoff are automated very quickly.
And that’s pretty important because FlowFilter is built for audio-rate modulation. It is not just a static filter you tweak once and leave alone. The plugin is designed to move cutoff, resonance, filter types, LFO settings, and other parameters quickly enough to let you have fun with more aggressive rhythmic filtering.
Of course, you can use it for cleaner EQ-style sweeps, but the more interesting side is the wild modulation and sound design potential.
FlowFilter includes morphing filter modes, analog-modeled filters, comb filters, formant filters, and tone filters. The morph filters come with DJ-style options and modes that change automatically with resonance and cutoff as you move through the XY space.
The analog models use zero-delay topologies and include vintage synth-style filters and more modern takes on classic designs. The comb, formant, and tone filters are there for more metallic resonances, flanging-style effects, and harmonic shaping.
Stagecraft also added more creative controls compared to AutoFilter, including parameters like drive and filter slope. You can modulate the cutoff, resonance, and filter type with an LFO or envelope follower, adjust the frequency sweep range, warp the LFO duty cycle, and control the wet/dry mix.
All parameters are fully automatable, including cutoff frequency, resonance, LFO frequency, LFO range, duty cycle warping, and wet/dry mix.
Like other Stagecraft plugins, FlowFilter includes factory presets organized into packs that help show what the different filter and modulation options can do.
FlowFilter is free to download and use, but Stagecraft asks users to register after 15 days. The plugin is available in VST3, Audio Unit, AAX, and AUv3 formats for macOS and Windows.
