Clack.DIGITAL has released Amp Squeezer, a free frequency-shaped overdrive plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Amp Squeezer was originally developed for the Darkglass Anagram pedalboard and released through the Anagram Marketplace. It is now available as a regular plugin, and you can download it directly from the Clack.DIGITAL website without creating an account, entering an email address, or signing up for a subscription. Sweet!
You can also try Amp Squeezer directly in the browser from the product page before installing it, which is a nice touch.
In a sea of AI-generated plugins and websites I’ve been seeing more and more lately, it is so refreshing to see something new that still feels human and old-school in the best possible way. The whole project has a very original vibe, and I love it.
I don’t need another overdrive plugin, but I’m keeping this one just for that. It sounds good, too, so that helps!
Amp Squeezer is based on a classic guitar overdrive pedal, but Clack.DIGITAL says it is more than a straight digital clone. The developer reworked the concept to make it useful across different instruments, with wider tonal control and a more flexible signal flow.
The main twist is the Heat control. Instead of always pushing the same mid-focused area you might expect from a non-transparent overdrive, Heat shifts the harmonic emphasis from crisp highs to fuller lows, and anywhere in between.
That makes it easier to keep low-end weight on bass or move the focus upward when you want a brighter drive. It definitely gives the plugin a different feel from the usual overdrive layout.
Amp Squeezer also includes a Dry/Wet Mix control, which I always welcome on distortion and overdrive plugins. Blending the clean signal back in helps preserve dynamics and articulation when you want a bit of grit without completely flattening the source.
The Drive and Tone knobs are mapped to passband gain and cutoff frequency to feel more natural to the ear, so you don’t have to memorize exact knob positions to get repeatable results.
Under the hood, the whole setup uses component-level white-box modeling, anti-aliasing, and internal processing at a minimum 176.4 kHz sample rate. It also uses IIR resampling to keep the plugin zero-latenc.
Clack.DIGITAL has also released an update for A-SID, the developer’s wah plugin, with bug fixes and other improvements.
Amp Squeezer is available in VST3 and LV2 formats for Windows 10 or later, macOS Ventura or later, and Linux systems based on Debian 12 or later. The macOS version supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
