M Media Audio has released Violet Crown, a free stereo channel strip plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
This is the first freebie from M Media Audio, although the developer also has three paid plugins on the site. Alternate Timeline is a bus and mastering processor, Speaker Breaker focuses on low-end balance, and Velvet Crush is aimed at high-frequency balance, and all three are priced between $29 and $39 at the moment.
My first impressions weren’t great because some of the graphics on the M Media Audio website have that AI-generated look to me, and I am not a big fan of seeing that kind of imagery used on product pages.
That said, the plugins themselves look pretty solid, and I tested Violet Crown yesterday. It is a solid choice if you need a simple EQ and compressor channel strip to use on individual channels or buses.
It is not groundbreaking, but it does the job just fine. I still love NastyVCS mkII by Variety of Sound for this type of thing, though, and that one remains a personal favorite.
Violet Crown combines a three-band EQ section with a custom RMS compressor. The EQ is more flexible than it first appears because each band has separate boost and cut controls, each with its own frequency selector.
The low band gives you two independent shelves from 20 Hz to 100 Hz, while the mid band offers two peak filters from 200 Hz to 5 kHz with shared Q. The high band has two independent shelves ranging from 800 Hz to 16 kHz.
You also get an input trim from -8 dB to +8 dB and a routing toggle that lets you choose whether the EQ comes before or after the compressor.
The compressor uses RMS detection with per-channel independent processing and a program-sensitive auto-release mode. You also get the basic controls: Threshold, Ratio via the Harder/Softer control, Attack, Release, and makeup Gain.
The two large VU meters show independent left and right output levels with a 300 ms ballistic RMS response. They also go dark when bypass is enabled, which is a nice cosmetic touch.
The plugin is completely free, and the download link is delivered by email.
Violet Crown is available as a 64-bit VST3 plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The macOS version also includes AU support and runs on Apple Silicon and Intel systems.
