Krystal Dynamics has released KrystalPeak, a free limiter plugin for macOS and Windows.
We covered Krystal Dynamics earlier this year when the developer launched with three free plugins: KrystalField, KrystalClip, and KrystalComp.
My first impressions of those releases were very positive, and KrystalPeak makes an even better first impression for me. The thing I like most here is the interface.
KrystalPeak looks clean, but more importantly, it’s visually helpful in a way that reminds me of Waveform Compressor by Woodstock Audio. You get a real-time waveform display that shows what is happening to the peaks, alongside input, output, gain reduction, and short-term LUFS metering.
That kind of visual feedback was, until recently, reserved for premium limiter plugins like FabFilter Pro-L 2. We have had some excellent free limiters for years (I still use LoudMax a lot), but many of them keep the visual feedback fairly simple.
Listening is always the most important part, of course. But when you are learning how limiting works, seeing those peaks change in real time can make the whole process a lot easier to understand.
Many of us are visual creatures, and I remember that seeing this sort of feedback helped me connect what I was hearing with what was happening technically. So, in my opinion, a limiter like KrystalPeak could be a fantastic learning tool for beginners.
The controls are simple. You get input and output gain, Attack for shaping how the limiter reacts to peaks, and Release with an auto-adaptive mode if you want the plugin to handle that part more easily.
KrystalPeak also includes Left/Right and Mid/Side stereo linking modes, oversampling up to 8x, bypass for A/B comparison, and a Delta mode that lets you hear the limited signal. There is also an optional Saturation control for adding color to the output.
Personally, I would keep the limiter clean most of the time, but the saturation option can make sense if you want a more aggressive limiting sound or a little extra density at the output stage.
The plugin is currently at version 1.0.1, which fixes the Mid/Side stereo linking behavior and metering from the early access release.
KrystalPeak is available in VST3 format for Windows 10 or later and in AU/VST3 formats for macOS 10.13 or later. It is 64-bit only, completely free for personal and commercial use, and you can download it directly from the developer’s website as a ZIP archive with no registration required.
