According to the developer, Sunbunny, Tentacles is a quadruple-stereo vibrato with spatio-spectral panning, available for free. That is a lot of interesting words in one sentence!
The aptly named plugin splits your signal into four parallel processing chains, each with its own band-pass filtering, saturation, vibrato, and stereo-position controls that can be adjusted separately. It is available as a VST3 and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
At the heart of the plugin is a large X/Y pad that controls these chains (each chain represented by a colored dot) in 2D space. The X-axis is a stereo pan function that places your sound left to right, while the Y-axis is a log-scaled frequency band operating between 80Hz and 12kHz.
In other words, you have a lot of options for creating spaced-out sounds and movement.
Tentacles also work in both stereo and a mono to stereo configuration, so you can take bland sounds and shape them creatively for mixing purposes or turn them into entirely new FX tracks for that sake.
To make the plugin action more organic, each parallel channel also has a drift function that modulates rate, pan, and filter center simultaneously, creating anything from subtle liveliness to very weird and obnoxious sounds.
The drift function is seeded, which means that rendering your project is repeatable. This is a cool feature for obvious reasons, especially if you hit a modulation goldmine and didn’t have the foresight to record the audio (many such cases).
That’s one less hiccup to think about.
This also means that you can apply this effect to your buses and actually do recalls if needed. Why you’d want to do this in the first place is another question, but we won’t judge.
To the right of the X/Y-pad lies a standard control panel where you can access the parameters of each parallel chain, as well as input and output knobs to control level and a mix knob to blend your processing.
Sunbunny Tentacles is a classic experimental plugin that does a lot of heavy lifting without you getting bogged down in configuration and menu-diving. Perfect for spicing up lame samples, creating an FX layer in your track, or doing sound design in general.
