Diginoiz has released Layer It Lite, a free version of its Layer It drum layering plugin for Windows and macOS.
Layer It is a sampler built specifically for layering drum sounds. It lets you load samples as stacked waveforms and trigger them all with a single MIDI note. You can offset the timing of each layer, shape them individually, and export the result as a single audio file.
It’s a good plugin, and the layering workflow is well done. I had fun stacking sounds with it. That said, I think the Lite version’s limitations hold it back from being as useful as it could be.
The free version includes 50 samples and 50 presets with a maximum of two layers. The full version, by comparison, has 1,300 samples, 230 presets, and supports up to 16 layers.
The Lite version also limits you to two filter types and two distortion types (the full version has six and 18, respectively).
Features like user sample import (unfortunately), stack export, preset saving, A/B comparison, the equalizer, and random sample functionality are all exclusive to the full version. The Lite version does include random preset functionality, though.
The biggest limitation for me is the locked sample import. If Diginoiz unlocked that single feature in the free version while keeping the two-layer limit, I think it would make Lite far more useful.
It’s just my two cents, but if the Lite version had sample import, people would actually start using it in their productions, and that would make them more likely to upgrade for the extra layers, effects, and library.
As it stands, you’re limited to the 50 included sounds, which is a decent collection of free drums but not enough to integrate into a real workflow long-term.
If you’re a beginner and don’t want to be overwhelmed by thousands of drum samples, Lite is perhaps still worth a look. The plugin itself is great, and I think it’s a fun way to explore what drum layering can do.
Each layer in Layer It includes standard volume and pan controls, along with a dedicated equalizer (full version only) and multi-stage envelope generators for shaping gain, pitch, filter, and distortion.
I also like how the plugin displays samples as stacked waveforms with individual timing offsets, so you can see the relationship between layers. You can offset layers by dragging with the mouse or scrolling with the scroll wheel for more precision.
The 50 built-in sounds give you enough to experiment with as a beginner, but again, I think sample import would make this an awesome freebie.
Layer It Lite is available in VST3, AU, and as a standalone application for macOS (10.13+, Apple Silicon supported natively) and Windows (10/11, 64-bit). AAX support is listed as coming soon.
