Gray Cat Music is offering the Regal Mandolin Decent Sampler instrument to the first 1,000 BPB readers for free. Use the coupon code BPBRULES at checkout on the Payhip product page to claim your free copy.
The instrument is normally a pay-what-you-want product with a $10 minimum, so this is a solid deal while the code lasts.
Sample libraries like this one are pretty cool because they give you access to instruments you would otherwise never have in your setup.
The Regal Mandolin sounds great and is also surprisingly customizable for something in this price range. You get access to enough parameters to really fine-tune the sound, although it already sounds very good out of the box.
The instrument was sampled from a 1920s mandolin built in Chicago by the Regal company, which was owned by Lyon & Healy at the time.
The developer recorded 60 samples across four layers using an AKG Perception 420 large diaphragm microphone, with minimal processing before building the instrument in Decent Sampler.
The four layers cover roundwound strings (pairs), flatwound strings (pairs), and single strings from each pair, all of which can be blended together or played separately.
The on-board controls include a Low Pass Filter that rolls off down to 500 Hz for a mellower tone, a Chorus effect that adds a subtle stereo pseudo-doubling, a Delay, and a Reverb.
For envelope shaping, you can use the standard Attack and Release knobs. Raising the Attack time gradually fades the samples in rather than triggering them at full volume immediately, which can produce a mellower sound.
Shortening the Release gives you snappy staccato notes, while extending it lets notes linger. There’s also a Tremolo knob, and the developer notes that setting tremolo around 25% alongside a raised attack time produces some unexpectedly pad-like textures.
Decent Sampler is required to run the library. It’s available for Mac (VST, VST3, AAX, AU, and standalone), Windows (VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone), Linux (VST, VST3, and standalone), and iOS (AUv3 and standalone).
If you don’t already have it, you can download it for free from the Decent Samples website.
