At pointblank, we take learning seriously, but we have way more fun doing it. From deconstructing chart-topping tracks to recreating iconic sound effects from blockbuster films, we make learning relevant, creative, and immediately applicable.

In this video, our lecturer James Malone summons his inner Kaiju as he recreates Godzilla’s iconic atomic-charge sound effect in Ableton Live using nothing but stock plugins. From analysing the original sound to rebuilding it from scratch, James walks you through his process, breaking down how to match timbre, tone, and modulation with precision.

Inspired to recreate iconic sound effects of your own? Why not take your passion for sound design to the next level with our BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering degree. You’ll explore specialist modules such as Advanced Sound Design, Composing for Media, and Audio for Games, developing the skills needed for careers in film, television, and game audio. Whether you dream of scoring the next blockbuster or crafting immersive soundscapes for chart-topping games, we’ll help you build the confidence, technical expertise, and industry insight to turn your passion into a sustainable career. You’ll also learn from expert lecturers like James, whose years of professional experience bring real-world knowledge straight into the classroom.

And with £1.7 million in capital funding from the Office for Students, we’re supercharging our already impressive facilities with world-class equipment, including a legendary 32-channel Neve 5088 mixing desk and iconic outboard gear. You’ll train on industry-leading gear from day one, so when you graduate, you’re not just qualified, you’re ready.

    Inspired?

Thanks to the dedication of our industry expert instructors, pointblank has earned a prestigious Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), placing us among the very best institutions.
