194db Audio has released Vox Relief Lite, a free vocal processing plugin for macOS and Windows, designed to quickly clean up vocal tone and help vocals sit better in the mix.
In plugin-land, the word “Lite” in a plugin’s name usually suggests a stripped-down free version with a paid upgrade coming later. That might be the case here, but at the time of writing, 194db Audio has only two plugins on its website, both free.
There’s no official mention of a full Vox Relief version yet, so for now, Vox Relief Lite stands on its own. Whether or not a more feature-packed “Pro” version is coming later, we’ll just have to wait and see.
The plugin keeps vocal tone processing extremely simple. You get just two knobs, both focused on subtractive vocal shaping rather than boosting and enhancement.
The first control, DE-BOXY, targets boxy low-mid buildup, the kind of muddiness you often get from proximity effect or less-than-perfect room acoustics. Instead of boosting the top end to fake clarity, Vox Relief Lite encourages you to remove the problem frequencies first, which is generally a smarter and more natural-sounding approach for vocals.
I’m a big fan of that EQ philosophy, and in practice, this knob does a solid job of opening up vocals without making them sound thin.
The second control, DE-HARSHER, tames aggressive high frequencies. It smooths out harshness without killing presence, which is often where simple de-essers or EQ cuts fall apart.
The developer doesn’t explain what’s happening under the hood, so it’s unclear whether these are static EQ curves or something more dynamic. While testing, I couldn’t definitively tell if there was additional harmonic processing involved, but what’s important is that the results sound musical.
In my experience, Vox Relief Lite does exactly what it promises: fast vocal tone cleanup. It’s not meant to replace a detailed EQ or surgical processor, but for quick results, it works well.
Interestingly, today has turned into a great day for free vocal tools. We also covered Saint Mike DSP Vocal Acrobatics, a free vocal compressor focused on fast dynamics control. Pair that with Vox Relief Lite for tone shaping, and you already have a strong two-plugin vocal chain.
On top of that, iZotope VEA is currently free with any purchase at Plugin Boutique until January 4. VEA adds AI-powered vocal shaping, noise reduction, and referencing, making this trio a surprisingly powerful vocal setup at little to no cost.
Vox Relief Lite is available now as a free download for Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 Big Sur or later, with VST3, AU, and AAX (macOS) plugin formats supported.
