AIR Music Tech offers the Pitch Shifter, a pitch modulation plugin for macOS and Windows, for free for a limited time.
Pitch Shifter is part of the AIR Creative FX Collection 2, a bundle that usually sells for $199. While the whole collection isn’t free, AIR is currently offering Pitch Shifter as a standalone freebie during this promotion.
You can’t get the plugin outside of the bundle under normal circumstances, so this is a rare chance to grab a useful sound design tool at no cost.
The plugin has a dead-simple layout with just two knobs (Pitch and Mix) and a mode selector. There’s no formant shifting like you’d expect in some modern pitch tools, but the five built-in modes handle a lot of that character work.
I found the Vocal mode especially handy for harmonies. It lets you shift a voice up or down while still sounding relatively natural, even if your singer is stretching beyond their usual range. It sounds best when the pitched vocal is mixed with the natural vocal.
Of course, I couldn’t help testing this one on monster sounds for cinematic sound design works, and it’s pretty cool for that, too. Try recording a growl, adding some distortion, and then pitching it all the way down with this plugin.
The five pitch modes (Vocal, Bass, Beats, Chords, and Textures) are pretty self-explanatory and tailored to each sound type. I’d say Pitch Shifter shines most with vocals, whether you’re stacking harmonies or pitching an entire line for effect.
You can also get some interesting textures on drums or chords if you’re into that sort of sound design experimentation.
The interface is sleek and dark-themed, with the mode selector prominently placed in the middle. The Pitch and Mix knobs are placed on each side, making the layout intuitive and easy on the eyes.
