Steve Lacy said it was “so awesome” that Drake considers him an “opp.”
In an interview with Jeff Ihaza for Rolling Stone, Lacy was asked how he felt about Drake calling him “a fragile opp” when he was streaming with xQc. “I thought it was so awesome,” he said. “I love Drake. I grew up listening to Drake and shit, you know. I was like, ‘This is so beautiful.’ Like, yes, I didn’t know what it meant. No one, no one knew what it meant. … And then Fousheé sent me a link and it was the video and I was like, ‘Whoa.’ I was so excited… I fucked with it. It was cool.”
During the stream with xQc, Drake took aim at various people who he considered slighted him during the height of his beef with Kendrick Lamar. He labelled Lacy “a fragile opp,” despite also conceding that he thought his music was good. When Drake was asked by xQc what a “fragile opp” is, he refused to explain much more. “Chat knows what I’m talking about,” he said. “Fragility.”
Lacy later responded on his Instagram with a playful post, which read, “Who tryna be my… fragile opp?”
Lacy performed several tracks at K Dot’s iconic The Pop Out — Ken & Friends’ concert in California last year, and he even joined the rapper and countless others onstage during the multiple encore performances of “Not Like Us.” Lacy previously collaborated with Kendrick on Damn.
During the interview, Lacy also spoke about his experience at The Pop Out concert.
“That was also fucking beautiful,” he said. “Yeah, that was so beautiful and profound because I think, you know, when you’re in Compton, you only see like one type of music being blasted, you know? So I never expected what I was doing to be respected or a part of the conversation of what Compton is. So to be there and to feel that love and to be amongst other artists from Compton that’s doing the thing that Compton is too was very, very special and it’s a day that I’ll never forget.”
