The TR-808 is a legendary drum machine if there ever was one. We have all heard its booming kick, snappy snare, and classic rimshot a million times, and we still need more cowbell.
The thumping 808 low-end has shaped everything from early electro and hip-hop to modern trap, techno, pop, and most other music styles, either as a prominent element in the mix or, at the very least, a layer below the original kick.
This is also the official plugin version from Roland, the company that made the original hardware in 1980. There are plenty of 808 sample packs and inspired-by instruments out there, including our free BPB Cassette 808 sample pack, but this is Roland’s own software recreation.
The plugin uses Roland’s Analog Circuit Behavior modeling to recreate the sound and behavior of the original TR-808, while adding workflow features that make sense inside a DAW. You get tuning and decay controls for each instrument, internal overdrive for pushing the sound harder, and an expanded step sequencer with lanes for each drum voice.
Each pattern can have eight variations, and you can drag and drop audio or MIDI patterns directly into your project. The sequencer also offers adjustable flams, sub-steps, soft hits, per-instrument last step settings, and shuffle controls, so it goes well beyond a simple 808 sample player.
Roland also added hardware integration for TR-8S and TR-08 users. You can transfer TR-8S patterns into the plugin, send beats back to the hardware, or use the TR-8S and TR-08 for hands-on control.

Roland TR-808 runs on Windows 10 or 11 and macOS 11 Big Sur or later. It works in compatible DAWs and plugin hosts that support VST, AU, or AAX formats, and an internet connection is required for installation and activation through Roland Cloud software.
