Daybreak Audio has released Omega Knob, a free version of the developer’s flagship product, Omega Comp.
Omega Knob features the default Omega Comp preset and a taster of the premium version, which is currently on sale for $57 (usually $119).
You can hear the paid version in action in Daybreak Audio’s short demo video.
A taster of the premium version, and a handy one-knob compressor, is what’s on offer, but I’ve had a series of issues with this one.
Since I couldn’t get this plugin up and running, here’s another recent compression-freebie that might be of interest: Silver Fox MK2 by Lotus Sound Audio.
Before detailing my comedy of errors, I want to highlight that it seems Daybreak Audio is a brand-new project, and Omega Comp/Omega Knob are the debut products. In which case, it’s possible that some mistakes were made in the rush to launch, and we should keep that in mind.
It’s also entirely possible that the issues are somehow triggered by something on my end, as machines and networks can be temperamental.
Either way, if your experience matches or differs from mine, please let me know in the comments.
The download process initially appeared straightforward; the issues started when trying to complete my checkout. Although the plugin is free, various payment gateways are available, but each option encountered “not available” errors for a period.
After a handful of attempts, my checkout was processed, and I was optimistic again.
The product page doesn’t provide any compatibility info, so I hoped to see clearly labelled installers ready for download. However, the only available download offers no further information; it’s just a product-branded Zip file.
I downloaded the file, and my anti-virus software wanted to delete it immediately, flagging multiple issues.
Interestingly, it was flagging issues with a Windows installer. Now, I was curious to find out if the Windows installer is everything, or the original Zip contained an unflagged macOS installer.
I know that any red flag is enough to turn off many users, but I was happy to enter at my own risk to give it a fair shake.
I switched to my other Mac, bypassed the anti-virus, and downloaded the Zip file. Finally, I wasn’t able to open the file; instead, I encountered an “invalid file type” error, despite the .zip extension.
So, I’m no further forward in finding out what the plugin is like and where it’s compatible, but I wanted to post something to find out if others are having the same problems.
I reached out to the developer regarding checkout issues and compatibility issues, and will update when possible.
