Kanye West has been making headlines lately for his outrageous antisemitic comments and other controversial statements. But there was a time that he was “sweet, funny, [and] self-aware.”
That’s the assertion from ex-Seinfeld writer Larry Charles, who spoke exclusively to The New York Post about his experiences with the rapper now known as Ye. According to Charles, West was exploited by the Hollywood machine, including his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, which led to his current downfall.
“He’s a golden goose and golden gooses in Hollywood are exploited,” he told the outlet. “Nobody steps up to help them and take them out of the limelight for a while, and get them the help they need. Instead, they continue to exploit them because they can make so much money.”
Charles, who worked with the “Power” rapper on a failed TV show, also recalled a man with a very different personality than the one currently in the limelight today. “He was like a sweet, funny, self-aware guy. He was very loose — this is pre-Kardashians,” he said.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West first began dating in 2011, and from that day forward, their relationship was constantly in the public eye. After going public with their relationship in 2012, the pair were married in a lavish ceremony in Florence, Italy, in 2014.
On February 19, 2022, Kardashian filed for divorce from West. The pair, who share four children, had their divorce finalized in November of that same year. Sources at the time reported that the split was “amicable,” with no dispute over legal and joint custody of their children.
“She trusts him around the kids. He loves them and is seeing a lot of them,” a source close to Kardashian said to Page Six at the time. “She leaves the house and he arrives and hangs out with the kids. They have an army of nannies so the transition is easy.”
