SZA says she was a “freakazoid” as a kid, marking the use of a decidedly headlines-friendly descriptor that one could easily also apply to the childhood version of the writer of this article.
For Interview magazine, the Lana artist—currently in the middle of a stadium run with Kendrick Lamar—was paired with Chappell Roan for a one-on-one conversation that inevitably found its way to the topic of magic. From SZA’s perspective, “everything is magic,” a sentiment that also happens to align with the ethos of a certain Tom DeLonge track circa 2007.
Asked whether she had this perspective as a child, SZA confirmed that she did indeed, citing the soon-to-be-revived late 90s/early 00s classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer as crucial for her in this era.
“I was a freakazoid,” SZA recalled. “I struggled to find friends because I’d just be talking about all this mystical shit, but it’s also from watching a lot of Xena[: Warrior Princess] and Hercules[: The Legendary Journeys] and Buffy [the Vampire Slayer]. It just cooked me, real bad. I was reading about Akashic records at like seven, so I was like, ‘Do you guys want to call Akasha?’ And everybody was like, ‘You’re so fucking weird, and I’m scared of you.’”

Wednesday, SZA will join Kendrick (with support from Mustard) on the latest stop on their Grand National tour in Landover, Maryland. From there, the stadium run hops over to Germany, Scotland, France, and elsewhere before wrapping in Sydney in December.
