Samplab has released Resynthesizer, an AI-powered plugin that transforms one-shot samples into playable instruments using an on-device synthesis engine.
Resynthesizer takes a unique approach by analyzing your audio and rebuilding it from scratch. The plugin separates the harmonic and percussive elements of a sample and lets you shape each one independently.
You can adjust parameters such as harmonics count, drive, smoothness, and more, and use them to sculpt each layer to your liking.
You can drag and drop one or two samples into Resynthesizer, and it will instantly pitch them for melodic playability across your keyboard. One of my favorite features, though, is the ability to blend two samples, morphing between them using an LFO for evolving hybrid textures.
I’ve had loads of fun layering something melodic like a guitar with a percussive hit and then using the LFO to animate the transition between them—it often results in sounds I wouldn’t have come up with otherwise. Pads also work great here, as you can create animated hybrid pads that sound fantastic.
The free version lets you transform up to ten samples, which is enough to get a good feel for the plugin. There’s no time limit, and all presets are accessible in the trial. You can also test drive the engine directly in your browser on the product page, which is a nice touch.
The synth engine’s flexibility reminds me of why resynthesis is such a compelling concept. Resynthesizer bridges the gap between sampling and synthesis. It offers the realism of recorded audio with the modulation and sculpting power of a synth. Sometimes, the plugin nails the original sample’s vibe almost perfectly, while other times it veers into unexpected territory, which can be a happy accident if you’re after new ideas.
For more features and unlimited sample loading, you can either buy the plugin outright with a perpetual license (currently discounted) or subscribe via the Samplab Complete bundle.
Resynthesizer is available for macOS (12 and above, both Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows (10 and above) in VST3 and AU formats. It runs entirely on your device, with internet only required for activation and during the trial. You can activate the plugin on up to three computers at once.
If you’re into reshaping your sounds or love pushing samples into new sonic spaces, this one is well worth a look.
