Mariah Carey still doesn’t believe in birthdays—or the passage of time.
In support of her new single “Type Dangerous,” the iconic singer sat down for an interview with UK radio station Capital FM co-hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North, and Chris Stark.
At the seven-minute mark in the video above, Carey was asked by North, “Is it true you don’t acknowledge the passing of time?”
“That is true,” Carey confirmed. “I just don’t believe in it.”
Her nonchalant response left the Capital FM cracking up and curious to clarify if she also negates time zones.
“No, just time,” she added, before joking she doesn’t acknowledge clocks either.
“Do you celebrate your birthday?” Welby asked.
“I don’t have a birthday, no,” said the Elusive Chanteuse singer. “Anniversaries, yes.”
“But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?” asked Stark, to which Carey responded, “Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out.”
Carey’s response shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to her loyal fans, also known as the Lambily.
During a 2014 interview with Out Magazine, Carey was asked about celebrating 25 years as a pop star at the time.
“First of all, don’t round up. If you’re going to round, round down!” she told the magazine with a laugh.
“I don’t count years, but I definitely rebuke them—I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling,” she continued. “Please put an LOL next to this, because people are going to be, like, WTF?”
She doubled down on the matter during her 2016 cover story with Complex when she was asked how she felt about turning 46.
“I don’t have a birthday,” she joked at the time. “I was just dropped here. It was a fairyland experience.”
In addition to her new single, Carey is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her 2005 blockbuster LP, The Emancipation of Mimi.
The album, which features smash hits like “We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off,” and “It’s Like That,” has been reissued in a special edition five LP vinyl set featuring new remixes and the previously unreleased cut, “When I Feel It” and is available now at Complex Shop.
A two-LP edition of the album is also available in standard black and limited edition clear vinyl.
