Moog Music’s Moog Mariana synth plugin is on sale for $39.99 at Plugin Boutique until July 31st.
Originally priced at $99, this is a solid opportunity to grab one of Moog’s most recent and forward-thinking software synths at a discount.
If you prefer something more retro, the Moogerfooger MF-104S Analog Delay plugin is available for just $29 during the same promo period.
Despite my initial expectations, Moog Mariana isn’t just another Moog emulation. It’s a modern take on bass synthesis with plenty of vintage DNA.
Moog describes it as a bass synthesizer, but I think that description is underselling Mariana’s sound design capabilities. It’s a dual-layer, monophonic or duophonic subtractive synth packed with modulation options, filters, and effects, all built to deliver the kind of big, bold basslines we expect from Moog but with a modern twist.
Each layer gives you two oscillators with multiple waveforms, plus a dedicated sub-oscillator and noise generator. The filtering section is powerful, featuring dual filters per voice and a separate filter specifically for the sub, providing you with extensive control over your low end.
I love that Moog even added a crossover dial to help keep the bass clean while allowing stereo width in the upper ranges.
The modulation system is deep. There are three LFOs, three envelopes (including an ADHSR mod envelope), and two random generators per layer. You can route modulation sources using a drop-down system with visual feedback, and even modulate across layers.
There’s also a virtual CV system for linking up with Moog’s Moogerfooger plugins, which opens up modular-style possibilities in your DAW.
Mariana’s effects section includes tape, tube, and overdrive saturation, a built-in compressor, delay (on Layer 1), and chorus (on Layer 2).
The routing is somewhat fixed, but everything sounds high-quality and feels well-integrated into the synth voice. The metering section and correlation tools are also useful for dialing in tight, mix-ready bass.
There are over 200 presets to get you started, but I think Moog Mariana’s main selling point is how easy it is to get fantastic sounds out of it with some manual tweaking. You don’t need to be a synth expert to get amazing bass and leads with this one.
And despite a few quirks like the lack of macros and a relatively high CPU load, Mariana feels more like a thoughtfully designed hardware synth than a typical plugin. The interface is resizable, clean, and optimized for touch control.
You can download Mariana in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS (11.7 or later) and Windows 10 or later. The plugin also runs as a standalone app.
At $39.99, Mariana is the perfect synth for bass lovers and Moog fans who want a modern instrument with unmistakable Moog character.
