Miley Cyrus says that she used to hide the money that she spent on drugs from her accountant.
The singer opened up about her past drug use during an episode of The Ringer’s Every Single Album podcast this week.
“The drugs were the biggest cost, which to hide those from my accountant, we called them vintage clothes,” Cyrus said while discussing her 2015 album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. “And so she would get these checks. That happens on touring all the time.”
Cyrus explained that her accountant was curious about those costs, but she always made sure to keep the drugs a secret.
“And every time she saw me, she’d be like, ‘Where’s that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?’ It’s like, ‘Oh, it’s upstairs,’” she said. “’We just really want to protect it. It’s really delicate. The fabric, got to take care of it.’ So I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.
“I’m so glad I survived that time in my life,” Cyrus continued. “I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it, I’m very glad I got to do it.”
Elsewhere in the same podcast appearance, Cyrus revealed that Disney prevented her from performing songs from her show Hannah Montana after it ended—for a while.
“It’s not like I wanted to,” Cyrus explained about why she stopped singing some of her best-known songs. “Performing ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense.”
But still, Cyrus said, she was upset about the ban.
“It was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them,” she said.
Disney eventually changed course on their decision after Cyrus was named the youngest Disney Legend ever.
“After being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,” Cyrus said.
