Cam’ron revealed he wrote The Diplomats song “I Really Mean It” for Lil Kim, but she turned it down.
On the latest episode of It Is What It Is, Cam and Mase were taking a victory lap, claiming the NBA took their idea of a USA versus the World All-Star Game format. The Harlem rapper offered their services to NBA commissioner Adam Silver in the form of a “secret consultation,” allowing the league to take their ideas without acknowledging their involvement.
“If you wanna contact us, and keep it, you know, saying that y’all didn’t use our consultation, we’re available for that,” Cam’ron said. “We’re available to give you secret ideas, and act like, ‘Yo, it wasn’t us.’ It’s called ghostwriting.”
The two broke off into a tangent on the topic of ghostwriting.
In response to Treasure Wilson asking if there is a song that many people may not know was written by them, Cam brought up “I Really Mean It” which Lil Kim passed on.
“I wrote ‘I Really Mean It’ for Lil Kim,” he shared. “Same format. ‘I Really Mean It,’ and she didn’t like it.”
Looking back, Cam’ron is happy with how that situation turned out because it turned into one of The Diplomats’ most iconic songs.
“That’s one of the best things—’cause that’s like one of my closeout songs, to be totally honest with you,” he continued. “And she didn’t want the song, and I’m happy she didn’t.”
