If, like me, you have hundreds of loops on your hard drive and need something to breathe new life into them, this one might do the trick.
Relooper is a real-time remix engine that generates new grooves and layers from whatever audio you feed it. It works by slicing incoming audio into blocks and playing them back at various speeds, directions, positions, and lengths, all synced to your DAW’s tempo.
What’s really cool here is that you don’t need to load any samples. Just drop it on a loop, and it starts generating new material on the fly. I love fast workflows like this one.
The fun part, though, is the groove engine, which offers 64 patterns across eight categories.
You can tweak the parameters to customize the groove. For example, Time changes playback speed (half speed drops an octave, double speed goes up one), and Repeat takes sections and loops them.
Reverse records a chunk and plays it backward, while Remix slices and rearranges, and Syncopate shifts slices offbeat.
My favorite is the Stutter effect, which does rapid-fire repeats for some crazy drum effects. There’s also Complex, which combines multiple types, and Glitch goes full-on crazy with digital artifacts.
You also get high-pass and low-pass filters, panning, a noise generator, offset control in 1/16 increments, and sidechain ducking against the dry signal.
From there, the audio passes through three processing modules.
Profile morphs your sound into one of 64 characters, including various drum types (kick, snare, cymbal, percussion), foley textures, complex resonators, and 3D space profiles. You can even send MIDI notes to the plugin to resynthesize your audio into pitched content.
Effect gives you 64 effects to choose from, covering distortion, reverb, SFX, modulation, sweeping filters, compression, gating, transient shaping, and EQ.
Motion controls the overall feel with 120-level modulation modes, from auto-fill generators that let the groove play only at the end of bars to trance-gate patterns, LFO shapes, and sidechain-style pumping.
You get two independent layers (A and B) that can be blended with your dry signal, and a smart randomizer for when you want instant new ideas.
Relooper is available in VST, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.14 and newer, Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows (10/11). A 15-day fully functional trial is available on the United Plugins website.
