Developer Sonora Cinematic has released Dark Veil Essentials, a free cinematic Soundbox library.
If you’re new to Soundbox, it’s a free and highly customizable MPE sampler developed by Audiomodern.
Now, Edinburgh-based Sonora Cinematic has released another freebie to add to the Soundbox collection, Dark Veil Essentials.
You’ll need Audiomodern’s Soundbox v1.1.1 or later, which you can download for free in AU, AUv3, VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone formats for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iPad.
Dark Veils Essentials is a cinematic library that takes dark, textural bowed instrument recordings and turns them into two playable, highly expressive presets.
Sonora Cinematic processed the recordings through various FX, pedals, amps, and outboard gear to enhance the already dark and ominous character of the sounds.
In any media composition, whether TV, film, or video games, ominous sounds are almost always the most interesting.
It’s where all the tension lies and where the most visceral, emotive experience for the listener occurs.
So, I immediately love these sounds.
Although Dark Veils Essentials is a relatively lightweight library, you can get a lot of mileage from it. The lower notes are a great base for any suspenseful, droning atmosphere, and the mid- to high-range has a real, haunting, almost vocal-like quality.
Altogether, you can create tension-packed, layered soundscapes without playing too many notes.
As Soundbox supports MPE and aftertouch, an MPE-compatible controller will let you get the most out of these sounds, especially when using fewer notes and relying on articulation for highlights.

This library is obviously a great fit for media composing, but it would find a home in most experimental music.
I really like the droning element of Dark Veils Essentials for darker electronic tracks and even meditation music.
If you like these sounds and want more, you can buy the full version of Dark Veils (fifteen presets) for £9.
Dark Veils is part of The Founder’s Locker from Sonora Cinematic. The Founder’s Locker is a collection of cinematic and experimental releases, available at a reasonable price that will never increase.
