Sonixinema has released Piano Evolutions, a deeply expressive upright piano library for the full version of Kontakt 8.1+.
This one immediately grabbed my attention because Sonixinema consistently releases some of the finest free Kontakt libraries on the market (for example, the recent Celestial Voices and Ethereal Pads).
So, I knew that this wasn’t just another upright piano with a few mic positions slapped on to make the feature list look good. Instead, Sonixinema pushes the Yamaha U3 into textural and almost cinematic territory, blending traditional sampling with evolving motion, rhythmic tools, and atmospheric sound design.
Piano Evolutions offers five articulations: Normale, Felt, Muted, Plucked, and Percussion. The first three give you everything from warm, natural tone to softer, more intimate strokes and experimental muted textures.
Plucked adds a harp-like quality, and Percussion turns the piano into a multi-instrument kit made from taps, brushes, sticks, and mallets.
You can load them as individual slots, blend them, pan them, and even reverse everything except percussion. I absolutely love how musical the reverse feature feels. You can set precise bar lengths, and it’s handy for transitions and building tension.
That said, where things get really fun is the Evo Page, which essentially turns the piano into an evolving pad machine. You assign sounds and layers to four corners of an XY grid, then morph between them manually or let one of the animated movement paths do the work for you.
It’s a sound designer’s dream, because it lets you blend articulations and atmospheres, dial in corner-specific EQ or drive, and have proximity or percussion layers drift in and out.
It’s incredibly easy to get those slow-blooming textures you hear in contemporary drama scores.

You also get a Rhythm Page that behaves like a musical sequencer. It can turn even simple chords into flowing pulses or arpeggiated beds, and Sonixinema includes plenty of presets if you want an instant vibe.
I found it especially effective when paired with the felt and muted articulations, as it instantly delivers delicate movement that still feels organic.
Rounding things out are 86 snapshots, split between articulation presets and more experimental sound-design categories (pads, reverses, evolutions, rhythms).
The library was recorded at 80 Hertz Studio 1 with a serious mic array, so the tone is detailed, resonant, and atmospheric right out of the box. It’s a brilliant choice if you’re into modern scoring, ambient piano, or evolving textures.
Piano Evolutions is available now for an intro price of £92 (regular £115). It requires the full version of Kontakt 8.1+, and the download weighs in at 9.9 GB uncompressed.
