Takashi Miyagawa’s love life turned into a mess. He allegedly scammed at least 35 women across Japan. In 2021, the 39-year-old marketing employee was arrested for fraud after allegedly faking romantic relationships with dozens of women. He then lied to each of them about his birthday in order to receive gifts. Sounds like the every day hustle of a lot of women.
Miyagawa, was a showerhead salesman (What The…) and reportedly exploited his job to meet women. Then he gave a different date for his birthday to each of the ladies. Over time, those lies added up and so did the money. The women showered him with presents, including a suit worth around $147.42 . Authorities estimated the total value of the gifts at approximately 100,000 yen, or about $668 USD. Now that’s not really embezzlement, but let us continue.
Somehow, the women began to realize something was off. He was getting messy confusing birthdates, recycled stuff like compliments and other inconsistencies in his personal details. They met up and formed a “victims’ association.” After talking to the cops, Miyagawa was arrested on suspicion of fraud. This is crazy. I guess you can knock the hustle.
Some of the women were devastated. They thought they were in a real relationship. I do not know how long this lasted, but they did not get “got” for a ton of money individually. Of course, they could be flat broke and giving him all their love and money. Messy Miyagawa’s fate is unknown.
Some have positioned this as a cautionary tale, in a digital dating courtship era. I thought this was regular in the U.S., especially when women get down like this quite a lot. They may not be on sociopathic levels, but they get the freebies and the gifts. I wonder if this story is even real.
The last report on Miyagawa said he was in the legal process. Clearly, Japan does not play that.
