quietformat has released TILTONE, a free tone control effect plugin for Windows and macOS.
TILTONE is about as minimal as it gets, so this article will be short. The plugin features just one knob that takes your signal from dark to bright, with some additional processing.
It may look basic, but under the hood, it applies complex EQ and saturation to shape your signal in a musical way. Think of it as a tilt EQ with a touch of analog-like warmth added for good measure.
The concept reminds me of Illume by Moonwave FX, which we also covered today, as it’s available for free for a limited time.
Illume, however, only boosts the high end. TILTONE gives you more flexibility by letting you go in both directions. So, it’s a quick and effective option if you’re trying to brighten up a dull sound or tame something too harsh.
What sets TILTONE apart from a basic tilt EQ is its built-in harmonic enhancement. As you turn the knob, it doesn’t just adjust frequency balance. It also adds subtle saturation, adding a bit of extra flavor with additional harmonics.
If you like tilt EQs, this one’s definitely worth a shot. I like how easy it is to use; there’s no menu diving or parameter tweaking. Just dial it in and move on. It’s perfect for quick fixes and subtle tone sculpting.
It’s also super easy to download. The plugin is available as a direct download from quietformat’s website. No account, registration, or activation required, which is always a welcome surprise.
One thing to note: the macOS installer is surprisingly large for such a simple effect—over 200 MB. I’m not sure what’s causing the somewhat large download size, but don’t expect a lightweight download.
TILTONE is compatible with 64-bit DAWs on macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 or later. It supports VST3 and AU plugin formats and runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Minimum system requirements are 8GB of RAM, with 16GB recommended by the dev.
Download it for free and see if it earns a spot in your tone-shaping toolkit.
