Nakst has made Altitude, an advanced hybrid synthesis workstation for Windows, macOS, and Linux, available as freeware.
We have covered several nakst instruments on BPB over the years, including Apricot, Regency, ExtraBold, and the now-free Integrate. Altitude was previously one of the developer’s paid instruments, so this is a nice, and somewhat unexpected, addition to the free lineup.
Thanks to BPB reader mrg for sharing this with our community!
Altitude combines subtractive synthesis, sampling, and FM-style sound design in one instrument. It has eight generators in total, split between four virtual analog oscillators and four sample layers.
The synth also includes two filters with 15 algorithms, eight effect slots with 17 effect types, and two 24-step sequencers with built-in arpeggiators. The sequencers can use different row lengths for polyrhythmic patterns, and they can be routed to different generators.
Modulation is my favorite part of Altitude. You get five envelopes, two step modulators, four math modulators, four LFOs, a 21-slot modulation matrix, four macro dials, and more than 500 modulation destinations.
The interface provides tons of visual feedback, with modulation previews, reactive displays, four included skins, custom skin support, and scaling from 100% to 300%. The factory ROM includes over 300 built-in patches, plus 265 MB of sample data for layering and patch building.
One super important detail, though, is the plugin format support. Altitude is not available as a VST3 plugin. It supports CLAP, Audio Unit on macOS, the native FL Studio plugin format on Windows, and a standalone version that requires compatible audio and MIDI hardware.
The CLAP version supports features like polyphonic non-destructive modulation, preset discovery, parameter indication, remote controls, and other extensions in compatible hosts. The native FL Studio version supports slide and glide notes and requires FL Studio 9 or later.
System requirements include Windows 7 64-bit or newer, macOS 10.14 to 13, or Linux with glibc 2.22 or newer. You also need 5 GB of available drive space, 1 GB of RAM, and a 64-bit Intel, AMD, or Apple Silicon processor.
Altitude has no copy protection or DRM. The itch.io page also notes that no generative AI was used.
