Clashing instruments muddy a mix. Use subtractive EQ, dynamic EQ, and smart panning to clean it up and make each element shine. Learn what frequencies to trim, how resonance works, and how panning builds clarity.

Equalizer Types: What Kind of EQ Are You Using in Your DAW? 🎛️

Step 1: Subtractive vs Additive EQ – Start with Subtracting

    • Subtractive EQ cuts problem frequencies to clear space in your mix. Less is often more.

    • Use a high-pass filter (HPF) to gently roll off deep rumble—especially below 20–40 Hz.

    • Focus on cutting between 150–350 Hz to reduce muddiness and improve clarity.

    • Additive EQ boosts tone or air—like adding brilliance with a gentle high-shelf above 12 kHz.

Step 2: Know the 7 Frequency Bands

Understand where your mix gets cluttered:

    1. Subharmonic (20–60 Hz) – Felt, not heard. Use HPF to remove unwanted rumble.

    2. Low (60–250 Hz) – Adds body. Too much? It becomes boomy or muddy.

    3. Low Mid (250–500 Hz) – Key for warmth—but this is where clutter lives. Gentle cuts help.

    4. Mid (500 Hz–2 kHz) – Crucial for clarity and presence. Avoid boxiness here.

    5. High Mid (2–6 kHz) – Adds attack and definition. Watch for harshness.

    6. High (6–20 kHz) – “Air” and sparkle. Use a hi-shelf for polish.

    7. Ultraharmonic (Beyond 20 kHz) – Adds subtle sheen, often outside human hearing but contributes to clarity.

Step 3: What Are Resonance and Resonant Frequencies?

A resonant frequency is a spike that stands out and rings too loudly. It makes parts sound boxy, piercing, or uncomfortable.

Use dynamic EQ—like Gullfoss—to tame resonance only when it appears, keeping your mix natural and smooth.

Step 4: Use Panning to Build Space and Stereo Image

    • Stereo panning spreads sounds between left and right, giving each part room to breathe.

    • LCR mixing (Left-Center-Right) helps with clarity by keeping key elements center and others hard-panned. It simplifies your mix and gives each part its own space.

    Final Word

Clarity in your mix starts with smart cuts, knowing where clutter lives, and letting space breathe through panning. Think subtraction first, then shine. Use tools that react only when needed, and give each part its own home in the mix.
