Welcome to ON A LEVEL, a sitdown interview series brought to you by Complex UK, which sees our EIC, Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson, get real with some of the greatest talents of now.
In the third episode of ON A LEVEL: Season 2, JP sits down with an old friend, GRMNL—the artist formerly known as Griminal—for his first comeback interview. Having returned to the scene at the tail-end of last year after a decade-long hiatus, GRMNL has been non-stop ever since, firing out a number of impressive freestyles and appearing on sets for the likes of DJ AG and his older brothers, DJs Mak 10 and Marcus Nasty. And it became clear, pretty quickly, just how much the game had missed the energy of Grimson, aka Grime’s Son.
JP first met the East London native back in 2008, when he featured him in Mixmag alongside Chip and Double S as the ‘New Stars Of Grime’. He was also a regular at JP’s ChockABlock raves in the late-00s. Here, for one of his most raw and honest conversations to date, GRMNL gets real about everything from that infamous F*ck Radio set and clashing Chip on Axe FM, to dealing with a major label deal gone wrong, battling and overcoming struggles with mental health and much, much more.
