Mutant Delay usually costs $39, but you can currently add it to your Audio Plugin Deals account for $0. I couldn’t find an end anywhere, so grab it sooner rather than later if you need a nice delay plugin with built-in ducking.
For me, the main advantage of this one is that little ducking feature. Ducked delay is a classic vocal mixing trick, but setting it up the old way can be a little annoying. You typically need an aux track, a delay, a compressor, and sidechain routing from the dry vocal or lead source.
Mutant Delay puts that workflow into one plugin. The delay listens to the dry signal and automatically ducks the wet delay when the main performance comes in, helping the vocal, synth lead, or other source stay clear while the delay fills the spaces around it.
That makes it especially handy for vocals, because we all know how big feedback-heavy echoes can quickly turn a decent vocal mix into an absolute mess. Obviously, it should also work well on lead synths, guitars, percussion, and any part where you want delay tails without burying the original sound.
The internal ducker works like a compressor, with Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Hold, and Release controls. Threshold and Ratio set how much the delay ducks, while Attack, Hold, and Release shape how quickly the reduction reacts and fades away.
The interface also includes a dual-color waveform graph that shows the dry source and wet delay behavior, which should make it easier to see what the ducking is doing.
The delay section is host-synced and lets you set independent left and right delay times. The divisions range from 1/1 to 1/16 bars, with straight, triplet, and dotted options available. You can keep the left and right channels separate or activate ping-pong routing for wider stereo movement.
Mutant Delay also includes high-pass and low-pass filters for shaping the delayed signal. Mode A applies the filtering to the whole delayed signal immediately, while Mode B lets the filtering build gradually as the delay feeds back, which can create more evolving delay tails.
Other useful details include a mute source option for bus-style routing, a smoothed click-free bypass control, and preset support.
Mutant Delay is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for macOS and Windows.
