Dylan Mixer has made the Tape Filth Kontakt 8 cassette synth library available for free download.
The freeware library requires the full version of Kontakt 8, and it is not compatible with the free Kontakt Player.
You’ll also need to create a Pulse Downloader account to access the plugin, as we’ll outline below.
Dylan Mixer created the library by running hardware synths printed to cassette players, namely the RadioShack CTR-121 and Sony BM-147 players.
Kontakt 8 is a 64-bit only release for macOS (13+) and Windows (10+).
Kontakt 8 offers the following format support: macOS (standalone, VST3, AU, AAX) and Windows (Standalone, VST3, AAX)
As you can hear on the official YouTube demo, Tape Filth is a super vibey release that is all early ‘80s nostalgia, delivering sounds that are perfect for retro-inspired music, game soundtracks, and synthwave.
The library offers two cassette machine sounds, each with its own character.
The RadioShack CTR-121 offers warm, warbly, and intimate sounds.
The Sony BM-147, which was a courtroom transcriber released in 1982, delivers crunchy, lo-fi tones.
Personally, I love the sounds on offer here. There are a lot of ‘80s throwback synth plugins out nowadays, but Dylan Mixer has definitely captured something quite distinctive with this release, with sounds that would be inspiring to work with.
Tape Filth offers four source types, namely Fat, Fossilized, Blown, and Sawed.
Fat offers a thick, rounded tape sound, while Fossilized has a cracked, brittle tone.
Blown has an unstable, overdriven sound, while Sawed is a sawtooth wave with a built-in 7th.
The plugin allows you to toggle between a wide stereo playback and a focused mono tape sound.
Tape Filth has a range of sound shaping options, made available through the following modules: Amp Envelope, Filter, and Reverb & Distortion.
There is an Arpeggiator included, with seven modes, and sustain pedal logic with realistic performance when using a sustain pedal.
Your tweaks to the above settings remain persistent when you reload the plugin.
If you want to get the full scoop on how to work the plugin, as well as hear a deeper run-through of the available sounds, it’s worth checking out Dylan Mixer’s 19-minute YouTube walkthrough for the plugin.
