BaconPaul, maintainer and developer of the Surge synthesizer project, recently released the nightly build of his Two Filters plugin for free.
As the name suggests, the Two Filters plugin consists of, well, two filters. Sounds boring?
Well, it’s more to the story! Each filter features cutoff, resonance, and morph controls, offering 14 distinct filter models, including tri-pole, comb, ladder, sample & hold, and more.
You can choose between a 6, 12, 18, or 24db slope to boot, but that’s only where the fun begins. The filters can also be routed in different versions of parallel or serial configurations, which opens up a world of possibilities for mixing or extreme sound design.
Dial in your desired amount of pre/post gain, feedback, and noise to further shape the sound.
Two Filters is equipped with two powerful step sequencers with fixed mod paths. You can draw curves in each sequencer and then dial in your preferred amount of modulation to the cutoff, resonance, and morph parameters.
The sequencers have a rate control and a smoothing parameter that really change the action. I set up a standard pink noise generator and managed to get a swathe of interesting sounds by just “blindly” tweaking parameters in no time.
Did I have any idea of what I was doing? Not really.
Did it sound cool? Yes! And that’s good enough for me.
You can also play with self-oscillation in the filter module and then use the sequencers to create anything from sliding pitches and melodies to interesting clicks, pops, and rhythmical figures. The fixed mod paths give you additional control over movement and depth.
I can see this being a very handy tool to create textures and evolving pads in a soundscape, and a no-brainer for more traditional use-cases. The different filter models can give a sound anything from subtle character enhancement to brutal mangling. Exactly what you need to place something unruly at the right spot in your mix.
If you’re keen on filter plugins, you should really check out Filtrr by BlepFX. It has a beautiful UI, great sound, and a lot of interesting extra features.
You should also download BPB’s very own BPB Dirty Filter to give your tracks all the grit they deserve.
