Altar is a newly released, open-source guitar amp simulator that offers a surprisingly deep feature set for a free plugin. The amp suite is currently in beta (v0.2b) and available exclusively for Windows. Altar features three amp channels. Two of them are native to Altar (a clean channel and a high-gain channel), offering everything from glassy cleans to aggressive distortion. The third channel supports NAM (Neural Amp Modeler) files, allowing you to load your own custom neural amp models directly within the plugin. That said, Altar’s standout feature is its modular design. You can freely drag and reorder amp, cab,…

schulz.audio offers the JUNI 1984 Chorus, a lush analog-style chorus plugin for macOS and Windows, for free until Sunday, November 23rd. If this concept feels familiar, it’s because we literally covered Sonic Academy’s JU-60 a couple of days ago, and the similarities are hard to miss. Both plugins aim for the iconic Juno-60 chorus sound, and even the two GUIs land in the same 3D style territory. But after spending some time with JUNI 1984, I can say it’s the more advanced and tweak-friendly of the two. If you love the classic Juno swirl but want more control over the…

That thing was a bit clunky. Since you couldn’t change loop lengths, it had to have its own power supply, loads of cabling, and on top of that, you couldn’t move start points after capturing. So if I grabbed something slightly off, it would come out a little out of time. Honestly, that was sometimes cool. But those limitations are what pushed me to remap my F1. Basically, the pads are split up for different purposes. Many of them are dedicated to capturing samples from whatever’s playing, and then I can play those back out through Traktor on a different…
