Developer Orchestral Tools has released FFOSSO, a freemium instrument player for macOS and Windows. We’ve seen freebies from Orchestral Tools before, like the Berlin Free Orchestra for SINE Player, but FFOSSO is a little different. You can use FFOSSO in two ways: with a free account, or with a paid subscription (€10 per month). Orchestral Tools considers FFOSSO a freemium product because you get access to many premium features with a free account. The most significant difference is that the free version features ten instruments and 5+ sound engines compared to 100+ instruments and 10+ sound engines for paying subscribers.…

I think a common misconception is that horror music needs to be terrifying at all times. Maybe that works for some films, but my scores tend to focus more on when life itself becomes horrific, which can include receiving life-altering news, spiraling with anxiety, or facing grief. Real life doesn’t come with a Halloween theme or Psycho stabs (though it would be pretty cool if it did – I love those scores). In reality, those moments feel more like amplified dramatic tension leading to mourning. I’ve found it far more powerful to treat horror as high drama or suspense, and…
Infinite Digits has released AmenBreak VST, a performance-based beat slicer and sample mangler for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with a generous free version that’s well worth your time. I appreciate it when a paid plugin comes with a free edition that isn’t crippled or constantly nagging you to upgrade, and AmenBreak VST gets this part right. Yes, the free version is limited compared to the full edition of AmenBreak VST, but it still does a lot. You get the full beatslicing core engine in mono, and you can get serious mileage out of it without spending a cent. AmenBreak VST…
Inlet Audio has released ANIMATE and SPHERE, two free sample libraries for Native Instruments Kontakt (they also require the Pulse Downloader), aimed at composers and producers who enjoy atmospheric, organic, and cinematic textures. Before getting into the sounds, there’s one important thing to mention upfront: both libraries require the full version of Kontakt (6.8.0 or newer), not the free Kontakt Player, and you’ll also need the free Pulse Downloader app to install them. If you already own Kontakt and don’t mind Pulse Downloader, though, these are absolutely worth a look. I spent some time with both libraries, and the overall…
Solid State Logic has released SpringVerb, a vintage-inspired spring reverb plugin for macOS and Windows, and it’s currently available at a discount along with some pretty awesome bonus freebies at Plugin Boutique. I’ve had a soft spot for spring reverb ever since I fell down the dub music rabbit hole roughly 25 years ago (Your Teeth In My Neck by Scientist being the main culprit). My wife absolutely hates it, so I rarely get away with playing dub for too long in the car, but even she can’t deny there’s something hypnotic about it (although not in a good way…
