Armory, the developer name of Daphne Wilkerson, a Computer Science (Human Computer Interaction) graduate based in San Diego, has released two free plugins: TurnTableSaw and LaunchCodes for macOS and Windows.
As technical as that sounds, Daphne is very much a creative, with a passion for art, design, and, of course, making music.
That blend of tech-know-how and creativity has led to Armory and the release of two new plugins, TurnTableSaw and LaunchCodes.
TurnTableSaw is a DJ scratching instrument, available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
I can’t say I’ve used many DJ scratching plugins, but I imagine TurnTableSaw is far more detailed than the average one.
The plugin offers four sampler slots and eight customizable pattern slots. So, already, you’ve got enough to start building a performance, rather than a throwaway effect.
Once you add and crop a sample, you have the pattern editor with two powerful envelopes: the record position envelope and the fader envelope.
These envelopes allow you to draw points to simulate the movement/direction of the record and fader. It’s an intuitive way to create simple or complex patterns.
Some of my favorite features are the Momentum Wheels, which let you smooth and humanize the movements you create in the pattern editor.

The second free plugin is LaunchCodes, an all-in-one instrument, specializing in high-impact sounds.
LaunchCodes features an oscillator unit with dedicated gain and pitch envelopes that synthesizes four basic wave types.
The Noise unit also has a pair of dedicated envelopes, this time gain and filter.
Although the focus is on explosive sounds, the foundation of LaunchCodes allows you to craft a range og sounds, from high-impact hits to sweeping soundscapes, and synth keys.
You then have a set of built-in FX modules that you can re-order as you please (Delay, Reverb, Filter, and Waveshaper).
You also have two LFOs (freely tunable or host sync) with extensive modulation options.
As with any good launch codes machine, you have the obligatory Big Red Button (also used to create live MIDI).
LaunchCodes is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
If you haven’t guessed from the names and not-so-subtle GUIs, Armory plugins are heavily influenced by the aesthetics of tactical weapons, which isn’t something we see every day.
