Katy Perry says she’s become a “human piñata” after facing criticism for her trip to space and the start of her tour.
The all-woman Blue Origin voyage, which Olivia Munn called “gluttonous” before it took off, opened up the floodgates for criticism of Perry and her particular brand of feminism. To make matters worse, several clips from her current tour in support of her 2024 album 143, have also gone viral, with people ridiculing her dancing and singing efforts.
In response to the backlash, Perry’s fanbase launched a billboard in Times Square, which reads, “Know that you are safe, seen and celebrated,” while also congratulating her on the start of her tour.
Perry caught wind of the gesture, and wrote a long response in which she assured her fans that she’s persevering despite the current anti-Perry Sentiment.

“I’m so grateful for you guys,” she wrote on Instagram. “We’re in this beautiful and wild journey together. I can continue to remain true to myself, heart open and honest especially because of our bond. … Please know I am ok, I have done a lot of work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me. My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, ‘No one can make you believe something about yourself that you don’t already believe about yourself,’ and if I ever do have any feelings about it then it’s an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it.”
Perry continued, writing that when the “‘online’ world tries to make me a human piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.”
Perry also highlighted the connection she has felt with her fanbase throughout the Lifetimes Tour, during which she selects a fan from the crowd and sings one of her songs with them. “I keep looking to the light,” she concluded.
