Hot Shower Audio has released bathROOMs, a free pay-what-you-want reverb plugin for macOS and Windows.
This one is a bit weird, but I don’t mind it. It’s basically a reverb that simulates five different bathroom spaces. The selectable spaces are Porcelain, Cove, Greenhouse, Lavender, and Baldosa, ranging from small and bright rooms to larger ones.
It is a fun take on a reverb plugin, and each bathroom has its own isometric illustration, which is a visual style that I really like.
I am not sure how the graphics were made. A few details look slightly odd, which made me wonder whether generative AI was involved, but the developer does not say that, and an artist may have drawn everything by hand. I don’t know for sure, but either way, I appreciate the look and the way it connects to the plugin’s concept.
As for the sound, I am not too impressed. It is okay, and there are useful room tones here, but if you already have a high-quality reverb, I do not think you need bathROOMs for its sound alone. The concept and interface are the main attractions, and it’s worth a look if you like plugins that have a fun visual theme.
The controls also follow the bathroom theme. Position combines size, depth, and stereo width to represent moving from outside the bathroom into the room. Surface changes the apparent materials, moving from reflective tile and porcelain toward more absorbent towels, curtains, and rugs.
Temp tilts the tone from cold and bright to hot and warm, while Wash moves between distinct reflections and a more diffuse cloud. Slap recreates the short echo between parallel bathroom walls and has its own timing control. You also get the expected Pre-Delay, Decay, and Dry/Wet controls, with decay ranging from 0.1 to 30 seconds.
There’s also a built-in ducker that can reduce the reverb while the source is playing, then let it rise during gaps. It has Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release controls and can respond to the source signal or an external sidechain.
bathROOMs also includes two A/B slots with copy, undo and redo, a resizable interface, dark mode, and 27 presets from five mix engineers and producers.
The plugin is the first release from Colombian mix engineer Alejandro Ramírez, also known as Ramalejo. Hot Shower Audio says that all optional payments received through September 13 will go through the municipal government of El Cairo, Colombia, to help rebuild homes and bathrooms damaged by the August 10 earthquake.
bathROOMs is available for macOS 11 or later in VST3, AU, and AAX formats, with native Intel and Apple Silicon support. The Windows 10 version comes as a 64-bit VST3 plugin and standalone app. The Windows installer is not yet code-signed, so Microsoft Defender may block it.
