Wild Surmise Music has released Ispín, a free saturation plugin for macOS, Windows, iPhone, and iPad.
Ispín is a saturator that adds weight and grit through four controls, moving from gentle thickening to obvious distortion.
I tested Ispín on full mixes first, but found it really hard to tame. It gets aggressive very quickly, and I struggled to find the right balance for the entire mix.
However, I like it on drums and synths. It works especially well as drum-bus coloration, adding color and glue. On synths, it also works great for adding a bit of analog color.
Richness is the main amount control, but it does more than simply turn up the drive. It links density, saturation, peak rounding, and makeup gain. The developer describes lower values as polite, while higher settings “stop pretending,” which is a pretty accurate summary of how quickly Ispín can become aggressive.
Colour tilts the nonlinear path from dark to bright. Because it changes the signal passing through the saturation, it also changes the character of the distortion.
Roughness shifts the active drive from rounded to hard and asymmetric. It is excluded from the signal path when Richness is set to zero. The fourth control is Output, with a range of -18 to +6 dB, to match the processed level to the bypassed signal.
The one control I would love to see is Mix. Ispín has plenty of character, and a dry/wet blend would make it much easier to dial that character back on buses and full mixes. You can set up parallel processing in the DAW, of course, but an onboard control would be faster.
I like the interface, too. It is nice and minimal, and the animated sausage is a fun take on the classic Sausage Fattener meme. And the overall mobile-style design reminds me of indie phone games, which is a nice look for a gamer like me.
There are six factory presets, and you can save your own. The product page also has a browser demo running the same DSP engine through WebAssembly, so you can hear the effect before installing it.
Ispín is free for macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later in AU, VST3, and CLAP formats. The iOS version runs as an AUv3 plugin on iPhone and iPad. There is no copy protection.
