Okay Synthesizer has released Okay Shaper, a free three-band volume shaper for macOS and Windows.
We featured Okay Distortion earlier this year, and I liked the somewhat playful design of that plugin.
The new Okay Shaper has a similar personality, from the goofy “You can go ahead and duck yourself” tagline to the colorful interface and the built-in theme options.
The first volume shaper I used was Cableguys VolumeShaper, and Okay Shaper, obviously, is a take on that same format. It does not have the same premium look as the Cableguys stuff, but if you want that curve-based modulation workflow in a free plugin, this one is definitely worth a look.
The main idea is what we’ve already seen in Cableguys plugins. You draw a volume curve, sync it to the host or let it free-run, and use it for sidechain-style pumping, trance gates, stutter effects, tremolo, or more detailed volume movement.
The interesting part is that Okay Shaper splits the signal into three bands. The Mid band is always active and can run full range, while the Low and High bands are optional. Once you split them off, each band gets its own curve, depth, rate, and trigger behavior.
That means you can duck only the low end when the kick hits, add a different movement to the mids, and gate the highs in the same instance. A regular sidechain compressor usually ducks the whole signal unless you build a more complicated multiband setup yourself.
Each band also has its own transient detector, with pre/post crossover listening, sensitivity, detection range, and optional sidechain input. If you do not connect the sidechain bus, the plugin falls back to the main input instead of going silent.
There are three trigger modes. Free mode ignores the detector and follows the clock, Retrigger restarts the curve whenever an onset is detected, and Envelope runs the curve once per onset before returning to transparency.
The curve editor supports up to 32 breakpoints per band with adjustable tension, and the plugin ships with eight shapes that can be edited, saved, and loaded into other bands. Sync covers 16 note divisions, while free-run mode ranges from 0.01 to 50 Hz.
Okay Shaper is available as a name-your-price download, and you can enter zero to download it for free. You need to enter an email address, and the developer sends a link that activates the plugin and provides the macOS and Windows downloads.
