Low End Candy has released The Clap, a free crowd-clap synthesizer for macOS.
The interesting part here is that The Clap does not use samples. It synthesizes handclaps from scratch by modeling everything from the skin smack to the body of cupped palms, and a adding bit of snap for more impact.
I often use samples of real claps layered over snares, but this is different. Every hit is generated live, so the plugin introduces small variations in pitch, tone, decay, timing, and panning.
Basically, the idea is to create a crowd of distinct hands rather than a single static clap sample repeating over and over, without using tons of samples.
This is cool to try as a subtle snare layer if your programmed drums feel too stiff, especially when you want handclaps that sit somewhere between tight drum machine-style claps and something more human.
Human claps are generally hard to emulate in music without sounding fake, so I always pay attention to freebies that approach them from a slightly different angle.
I was recently using the free Jacob Collier Audience Choir Kontakt library for clap sounds, and it can work well in the right context, but you really need to be careful that they’re not too loud in the mix. If you want more free clap sounds, I released a free sample library called Hands Make Sounds many years ago, and it is still worth a try.
Anyway, with this one, the main controls are People, Scatter, Random, Tone, Decay, Low Cut, and Stereo Width. There is also a Human/Digital slider that moves from tighter, more identical claps to fully organic variation.
The Clap can play automatically in time, landing on beat 3 for a half-time pocket, or you can trigger it live with MIDI. You can simply drop it on a MIDI track, pick a preset, and it starts clapping in time when the project plays.
There is also an Applause mode for continuous crowd clapping. You can use it for a full room of people clapping, or trigger one-off crowd sounds with MIDI notes.
The room section includes reverb spaces named Booth, Studio, Club, Hall, and Stadium. These are fine, but I still think it’s best to use a third-party reverb in your mix.
