Audiolatry has released Apus, a free/pay-what-you-want lo-fi virtual instrument for macOS and Windows.
I haven’t seen anything new from Audiolatry for a while, so I was happy to get an email about this one. We’ve featured quite a few Audiolatry releases on BPB in the past, including LoQuest last year and Easy Strings in 2023.
It’s been quite a break since then, but definitely happy to see more from this developer. They usually make fun sample-based instruments with some inspiring sounds included for good measure.
Most Audiolatry plugins come in free and paid versions, often with a smaller preset count in the free edition. Apus is different because it is free/PWYW with all features included, which is always nice to see.
Apus is made for warm chords, dusty melodies, soft pads, and simple lead sounds. The sound set includes 52 presets covering keys, leads, pads, and other melodic patches for lo-fi hip-hop, chill beats, ambient music, retro pop, and relaxed electronic productions.
The interface keeps things very simple, with the usual sound-shaping controls for quick ideas. You get an ADSR envelope, filter, glide, modulation, velocity controls, and built-in chorus, distortion, delay, and reverb.
So, this is essentially another straightforward Audiolatry instrument, aimed at quickly getting usable lo-fi sounds rather than getting lost in deep synthesis. You load a preset, shape the tone a bit, add some movement or effects, and keep writing.
To download Apus for free, enter “0” in the “Name a fair price” field on Gumroad. Audiolatry notes that donations of $2 or more help more directly because of platform fees, but the plugin can be downloaded for free.
Apus is available for Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 in VST3 format. The macOS version supports Mojave 10.14 to Sequoia in VST3 and AU formats.
