Épica Audio has released Resonant Reverb, a creative plate reverb and multi-effect plugin developed in collaboration with 11-time Grammy-winning producer and engineer Joe Chiccarelli.
Joe Chiccarelli’s credits include The White Stripes, The Strokes, Morrissey, Little Dragon, The Killers, and U2, and Resonant Reverb is based on a technique he has used for years on vocals, guitars, synths, and other sources.
The idea behind it is useful for getting cleaner mixes. Resonant Reverb places resonant high-pass and low-pass filters before and after the reverb engine, so you can decide which frequencies feed the reverb and then shape the tail again after the plate.
The audio passes through the Pre Reverb Filter, then the Plate Reverb Engine, then the Post Reverb Filter, and finally the Output section. Each module has its own bypass, so you can use the full chain or treat parts of the plugin as standalone tone-shaping tools.
The Pre Reverb Filter includes smooth filter slopes, adjustable Q controls, and harmonic distortion. If used subtly, it helps keep reverb from becoming muddy or overly bright.
On the other hand, if you push it a bit harder, it can help make the input more resonant and characterful before it hits the plate.
The reverb section itself is a plate-style engine. It can move from a tight ambiance to some very long atmospheric decays. Épica Audio also built an 1176-inspired compression stage under the hood, and this works well for adding density and movement to the reverberated signal.
After the reverb, the Post Reverb Filter lets you carve the tail into place, but it can also become a creative modulation target if you automate the filter frequencies or use more exaggerated resonance settings.
That is where Resonant Reverb starts to feel less like another regular reverb and more like a creative FX processor. It can do some crazy stuff when pushed, including extending the 808 kicks, creating all sorts of lush textures, and more.
Joe Chiccarelli created 58 factory presets for the plugin, and many of them are complete tone-shaping chains for vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths, keys, horns, and mix utility tasks.
The controls include reverb Mix, Width, Pre-Delay, and Decay, with the decay time ranging from 0.5 seconds to 47 seconds. The Output section adds final output gain and a global dry/wet control, which is useful if you want to run the plugin directly on an insert.
Resonant Reverb is available now for $55.99 plus tax, down from the regular $79.99 price. It runs on macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10/11 in 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX formats, with an internet connection required during installation.
