Unfiltered Audio has released BattleFX, a free multi-FX plugin built around the send effects section of its Battalion drum synth.
I downloaded this immediately because the screenshots had me sold before I’d even finished reading the product page. It looks amazing, clean and crisp, just the way I like it!
But the sound is probably even better, haha. So, this one goes straight into my sound design arsenal.
If you’ve used Battalion, you already know how good the Shatter Delay and Headspace Reverb are. Unfiltered Audio has finally pulled them out into a standalone plugin you can drop on any track.
The reverb alone is worth downloading the plugin for.
It’s an updated version of the reverb originally found in the SILO granulator, and it ships with ten different modes (Dark, Rusty, Saturated, Glitter, Crayon, Bokeh, Flare, Flutter, Hollow, and Austere).
Each one does its own thing; they’re not just subtle variations on the same theme. It’s a lot of fun to experiment with, and I’m strongly considering adding this to our list of best free reverb plugins.
You also get input and output tilt EQ to match the reverb to your track, syncable pre-delay and decay, and a sample-rate control that drags the whole thing down into more gnarly territory the lower you take it.
The Shatter Delay is also great. It’s a creative granular delay built around a granular buffer that avoids pitch artifacts when the time changes.
It comes with feedback (and a feedback tilt filter), choke, a Glitch control that applies smooth Brownian motion to the delay time, a Stereo mode that processes the glitch separately on the L/R channels, and the same sample-rate destruction as the reverb. There’s also a Pong mode for wider stereo work and a ducking function on the output.
New to both effects is an automatic choke system that chops the delay and reverb buffers at repeating intervals, with a Euclidean pattern knob. It can run free or tempo-synced and can be nudged slightly off the beat in either direction, which is great for organic-feeling ducking patterns when you crank the Maximize knob on noisy input material.
Speaking of which, the master section borrows the Maximize and EQ from Battalion’s master, plus a multi-mode distortion (soft clip, hard clip, wave fold) and dedicated Solo/Mute on each effect block.
As I already mentioned, the interface is top-notch.
It’s super clean, super crisp, and fun to use. There’s a whole bunch of color themes to choose from – light, dark, with color, without color — and you can even randomize the theme if you can’t decide.
The download process is the only minor drawback, but it’s not too bad. It took me less than five minutes to get this up and running in Studio One.
You add BattleFX to the cart on the Unfiltered Audio website and complete a free checkout. You’ll then get an email with your license key and a link to the installer. Run the installer, open the plugin, and enter your email address and license key on first launch. So yes, online activation, but no license manager to install.
BattleFX is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS (native Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows.
