deFORM is a brand-new free cinematic synth from ebbandflow, and it’s available for macOS (Monterey to Tahoe) and Windows (10-11).
After adding deFORM to your basket, you’ll be asked to provide an email and residential address to complete the free transaction.
Once complete, you’ll have immediate access to download links via the website or your email.
High-speed internet access and 6GB of drive space are listed as requirements for the download because there’s a fair amount of content.
deFORM features eight distinct synth voices, each with eight stackable layers.

Immediately, with the ability to stack up to eight layers, you get the impression that deFORM doesn’t just offer the emotional element of cinematic sound; it goes all the way to epic.
Rather than selecting the number of stacked layers statically, deFORM offers a much more organic approach, and I really like that.
The main page features a dual-function XY pad with Voice and Unison handles.
When the Voice handle is centred, you have a single layer; moving it outward adds layers until you reach all eight.
Similarly, the further you take the Unison handle away from the centre position, the stronger the unison and detuned effects become.
Cinematic sounds, especially synths, are rarely static; they evolve in various ways to reflect/complement visuals or guide viewer emotion.
So, I love that these core controls are implemented as they are, and with MIDI learn, you’ve got tactile control over the core of your patch.
Just under the XY pad, you have multi-mode filter controls, and, again, if you can assign these to a physical controller, you can create some wild transitions by adjusting the low/high pass cutoff controls simultaneously.
The main page also features controls for Shape, Overdrive (waveshaping distortion unit), Foldback (tape-modelled multi-tap delay), and Reflect (algorithmic reverb), as well as a randomiser.

As much as I love the XY pad for adding layers, it may initially seem like you have limited control over layer selection and placement.
However, the Focus control on the FX page allows you to select which single layer is in use, and which layer takes lead focus when stacked.
The Overdrive is interesting because it’s more than meets the eye. You can adjust its position in the path or add varied animation with the Motion control.
Another nice feature is the polyphonic Glide control, allowing a smoother transition from one note/chord to the next.
deFORM produces some incredible cinematic sounds, and seems like a real treat as a freebie!
