Vubeatz has released VU202, a free sampler plugin that started life as an iOS beat machine and now works as a VST plugin on macOS and Windows.
I typically expect a plugin designed for mobile to feel awkward in a DAW, especially with its portrait-oriented interface. I tested the VST version in Studio One on my MacBook Air, and it works surprisingly well.
The tall layout actually keeps everything visible and close to the pads, which makes for a super-fast workflow. It reminds me a little of Poise, my favorite percussion sampler ever, which is now also free but Windows-only and hasn’t been updated in a long while.
In terms of workflow speed, I’d compare VU202 to lightweight samplers like Sitala and Speedrum Lite, but with more features, especially the step sequencer and per-pad effects.
VU202 gives you 32 pads across four banks (eight per bank), with drag-and-drop sample loading. Each pad has its own effects (pitch from -12 to +12 semitones, reverb, delay, low-pass filter, band-pass filter, and ring modulation), along with trigger or gate playback, one-shot or loop modes, reverse, and mono/stereo switching.
What I like most is the sound character control. You can switch each pad between HiFi, Standard, LoFi, and LoFi2 modes. The two lo-fi modes apply exaggerated bit crushing, which didn’t do much for me personally.
But Standard mode sounds great on drums. It emulates vintage samplers with a slightly lower bitrate. You basically get a bit of added crunch and character without going overboard, and it sounds fantastic on drum machine samples.
There’s also a built-in pattern sequencer with up to 64 steps, per-step nudge, swing, velocity control, and quick pattern tools like duplicate, erase, and double. Song mode lets you chain patterns into a longer arrangement.
For a free sampler plugin, there’s a lot of depth here once you dig past the simple surface. I’ll do more testing later this week, but my initial impressions are very positive.
Oh, by the way, you can also customize the colors, and I couldn’t resist giving it a subtle BPB facelift, as you can see in the screenshot.
What’s also cool is that the desktop version is a simple download from the developer’s website. There’s no activation or registration involved. You download the VST, add it to your DAW, and you’re ready to go.
The iOS version is available on the App Store as a standalone instrument, and an Android version is in development.
