Airspace combines two convolution reverb modules with a stereo delay and a dedicated modulation section. The processing chain is laid out as Colour – Delay – Space, and you can use each module independently or blend all three together.
ModeAudio included over 450 impulse responses (IRs), organized into categories such as Amplifiers, Drums & Percussion, Found Percussion, Kitchen, Piano, Experimental Textures, Hardware Reverbs, Loops, Real Spaces (Short/Medium/Long), and Springs & Plates.
For anyone unfamiliar with convolution reverb, it works by applying the sonic characteristics of a recorded space or hardware unit (the impulse response) to your input signal.
In practical terms, that means you can place a sound in environments ranging from concert halls and cathedrals to more unconventional spaces like industrial locations or everyday objects.
Both the Colour and Space modules are identical in functionality. Each lets you adjust Mix, IR Gain, and IR Size (from 20% to 500%), as well as Attack, Hold, Release, Predelay, and envelope curve shaping. There’s also a built-in four-band EQ per module, allowing you to tame resonances or reshape the tonal balance of the IR.
I particularly like the IR Size control; stretching or shrinking an impulse response often produces results that feel very different from simply increasing decay time on a traditional algorithmic reverb.
The stereo delay section can operate in free or tempo-synced mode, with independent left/right delay times and feedback amounts. Crossfeed routing allows the channels to interact, creating more complex rhythmic patterns. High-pass and low-pass filters (with resonance) help keep the repeats under control.
The Delay Mod section adds further movement via dual LFOs (sine, triangle, square, random, smooth random) that can modulate delay time and panning.
A four-octave pitch shifter processes the delay taps, making it possible to create shimmer-style effects, subtle chorusing, or more experimental pitch patterns. Used sparingly, I find the pitch modulation especially effective for adding tension without overwhelming the original source.
Airspace also includes more than 240 presets across categories like Ambient, Blur, Cosmos, Reflect, Transform, and Warp. Presets are a practical way to explore the range of IRs and modulation options without building everything from scratch.
Airspace is available in VST3 and AU formats for macOS (10.13 and higher, Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows 11 and higher. Installation requires around 400MB of disk space, and a free trial is available if you’d like to test it before purchasing.
