Niviem has released three free plugins for macOS and Windows: the Phase One phaser, the OPT4 opto leveling amplifier, and the DalEQ Core parametric EQ.
All three plugins arrived in January this year. And it’s a nicely balanced free bundle that includes one creative effect and a couple of mixing tools.
I haven’t tried Niviem’s software before, but based on the detailed documentation and features, these don’t look like rushed freebies. Each plugin comes with a proper manual and quick-start guide, and my first impression is that these plugins were done with quite a lot of attention to detail.
The developer also offers seven commercial plugins that cover various types of effects. No virtual instruments, though.
Phase One
Phase One is a six-stage phaser inspired by early 1970s hardware, most notably the Maestro PS-1A. It’s built around a six-stage all-pass topology, which creates three moving notches for that familiar swirling phase sound.
The catch is that there’s no variable rate control like in most phasers. Phase One uses three fixed speed presets (Slow, Medium, Fast), each chosen for modulation rates that generally sound good. So you can’t do any extreme or weird phasing effects. The focus is on getting more traditional results.
One of the nice little details is the Leslie-style speed ramping, where switching speeds results in smooth acceleration or deceleration rather than abrupt jumps. There’s also a Vintage mode that adds a bit of instability, and a Modern mode that adds depth control and tempo sync.
OPT4
OPT4 is an opto leveling amplifier plugin inspired by the Teletronix LA-2A. Like the original, it relies on a feedback compression topology and a modeled T4-style opto cell, with program-dependent attack and release behavior.
Controls are minimal, as expected from a plugin inspired by the LA-2A (check out our free BPB Dirty LA if you’re looking for more options). Basically, Peak Reduction and Gain knobs handle most of the work.
A nice addition is the exposed R37 emphasis control, which acts as a sidechain high-pass filter and lets you prevent low frequencies from driving the compression too hard.
The developer also included a tube stage and transformer modeling for subtle harmonic color, and oversampling options are available if you want cleaner saturation.
DalEQ Core
The third and final of the three is DalEQ Core, an eight-band parametric EQ designed for mixing and mastering.
Each band supports multiple filter types, wide slope options up to 96 dB/oct, and per-band stereo, mid, or side processing. DalEQ Core also includes a real-time spectrum analyzer, linear-phase mode, and dynamic EQ features, which is quite a lot for a free plugin.
The interface reminds me of Reaper’s native EQ tools. It looks clean, and the color scheme is quite similar to that used in ReaFX plugins.
Download
Honestly, none of these plugins are must-haves if you already have some go-to compressors, EQs, and phasers. But if you’re still building your collection or enjoy trying new plugins for inspiration, this is a pretty solid free bundle.
All three plugins are available as AU and VST3 for macOS and Windows, and you can download them directly from the developer’s website without registration.
