Craft Labs has released Mayerism, a free guitar amp plugin for Windows and macOS inspired by the signature tones of John Mayer.
Mayerism is another example of how far free guitar amp plugins have come in recent years, and that is especially true for those built on Neural Amp Modeler technology.
Not that long ago, it would’ve been hard to argue that freeware could compete with paid amp sims in terms of feel and realism. There were a few exceptions, like LePou guitar amps, but such cases were quite rare.
That’s no longer the case. We’ve seen some insanely good free amps lately, and Mayerism fits right into this new generation of high-quality guitar freeware.
The main advantage of these NAM-based plugins is that you get the full modeling quality in a streamlined interface.
Instead of letting you deal with the complexity of the Neural Amp Modeler environment, Mayerism wraps the captured amp model into a much more user-friendly plugin. In this case, that means a tone that’s already dialed in for a John Mayer-style guitar sound and some handy customization options, but not enough to overwhelm the average user.
I went through the presets quickly this morning, and this thing sounds impressive. You get some fantastic clean sounds with strong touch sensitivity, smooth mids, and a clear top end.
The interface is also super clean and easy to read, with sections for pre-effects, amp controls, and post-effects. It’s really nice to look at, too.
As for the parameters, there are Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, and Output controls, tuned to work with the underlying Neural Amp Modeler capture. There’s no cab or mic swapping here because the goal is consistency and ease of use.
Mayerism includes a small pedalboard with four stomp-style effects. You get a compressor for extra sustain, a clean boost for pushing the amp or lifting leads, a Tube Screamer–style overdrive, and a higher-gain distortion option.
On the output side, you’ll find a chorus for subtle modulation, a delay (labeled Pendulum), and a reverb for adding space.
There’s also a noise gate and a built-in doubler, which is handy for quickly adding width and thickness without setting up multiple tracks.
Mayerism is open-source and available to download for free from GitHub. The plugin is compatible with Windows and macOS and is provided in standard plugin formats suitable for use in most modern DAWs.
